A New Jersey man is lucky to be alive after surviving a terrifying accident: Shooting himself in the heart with a four-inch nail .

Dennis Hennis, 52, a self-employed builder, was working on his neighbor's roof on March 31 when his nail gun jammed. Hennis was trying to clear the tool when a nail shot into his chest and hit the right side of his heart.

"It felt like someone poking me in the chest, like a tap," Hennis told ABC News. "There was no pain, actually, but a lot of shock. I couldn't believe I had just done that."

A thick fog prevented paramedics from airlifting Hennis to Cooper University Hospital, nearly 50 miles from where the accident occured.

Hennis went into cardiac arrest and had to be given CPR in an ambulance en route, widening the hole in his heart. But then the fog lifted, and the injured builder was able to make the rest of the journey by helicopter.
