Firefighters have rescued a toddler who fell down a 40ft well - with help from an iPhone.

Emergency services were called after the child's cries were heard coming from the bottom of the narrow well in a village near China's Mengzi City.

During the tricky rescue operation, the young boy kept slipping out of rescue harnesses that were designed for adults.

But in a twist of ingenuity, the team lowered an iPhone with a video camera allowing them to see the boy's position.

The close-up recordings were used to better position the ropes around his small body, allowing them to pull the distressed child to safety.

The toddler was taken to hospital but sustained no major injuries.
