Kolkata(India): Ariful Sheikh, a five-year-old boy from West Bengal, has spent nearly a year at Kushtia Jail in Bangladesh. He was detained along with his grandparents by Bangladesh security forces while they were crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Hachimuddin Sheikh, his wife Mafroza Khatun and grandson Ariful were held on April 15 last year, while they were entering Bangladesh through the Piyarpur border in Doulatpur district. They were headed to a relative's place in Bangladesh for a social visit. But they did not have the required permission and papers.

So they were fined 500 takas. Since they didn't have the money to pay the fine, they were ordered to serve two-month imprisonment. But months beyond the expiry of their sentences, they still haven't returned to India.

After human rights activists and the government of India condemned their wrongful detention and demanded their release, Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs issued a release and repatriation order on April 15. But despite the order, there is still no news of the minor boy and his grandparents.
