Man celebrates his 40th birthday by running 40 miles. What will he do when he turns 69?

A birthday balloon attached to a water pack trailed West Des Moines resident Dave Larson as he ran 40 miles in honor of his 40th birthday on Sunday.

He hit the pavement at 7 a.m., starting his birthday goal at home in the 1000 block of Ridgewood Court. His wife, Leann, and their two children, Andrew, 8, and Allie, 3, followed him in a car throughout the run.

After zigzagging through Urbandale, Clive and West Des Moines, Dave completed his goal at Raccoon River Park, 2500 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines, at about 2:30 p.m.

Dave entered the park with his wife running alongside him and his son riding his bike. He was all smiles.

“My legs are rubbery. I feel like I could melt into the pavement,” he said.

Leann said she thinks her husband is crazy — but she’s proud of him.
