Agra, India : The ups and downs of politics have derailed a love story. Gazala Begum of Kanpur and Choudhary Basheer of Agra fell in love and married after getting elected to the Uttar Pradesh assembly 10 years ago as Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates.

On July 6, 2003, Gazala came to Agra as Choudhary Basheer's bride. In 2004, the two joined the Samajwadi Party. In 2005, the couple was blessed with a daughter. Gazala had three children from her earlier marriage.

But political uncertainties and personal differences forced them to drift apart.

Gazala remained with the Samajwadi Party and has now won from Rampur. Basheer, who joined the Congress but later contested as a candidate of the Rashtriya Samanta Dal, has lost the election.

Basheer has now divorced Gazala and also returned the 'Mehar' amount given at their wedding.

Gazala may be inducted as a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav ministry. Basheer, meanwhile, will have to live with memories of the good old days. (IANS)
