NEWHAVEN, England – A 10-year-old girl in southeast England tried cocaine after her friend found a stash of drugs in an empty Pringles can at a playground.

The youngsters brought the drugs to Southdown Junior School in Newhaven last year and informed a teaching assistant, according to British media reports Sunday.

The drugs were then traced to 31-year-old Jamie Bartholomew, The Brighton and Hove Argus reported. Police found more drugs when they raided his home.

He was handed a suspended sentence at Hove Crown Court, with Judge Michael Lawson telling him, "You have done a terrible thing."

Bartholomew was given a 12-week suspended sentence, placed under curfew and ordered to carry out unpaid community work.

Christine Terry, executive headteacher of Southdown Juniors, said no children were harmed despite the 10-year-old tasting the cocaine.

"This sort of thing could happen in any school. The most important thing is what you do about it," she said.
