Village in the clouds: Beacon of light shines out through the mist in spectacular Alpine setting

A village floats through the clouds like a mystical island in this amazing picture.

Taken by amateur photographer Vittorio Poli, it shows a town emerging eerily from between the clouds in the Asiago Plateau in northern Italy.

Mr Poli, 31, who lives in the area, was returning from a trip up a nearby mountain at dusk when the mist came rolling in.

He said: 'I was coming down from Mount Bertiaga.

'It was about 5.15pm and I was still about 1,000 metres up when my eyes were caught by a sea of fog that was slowly enveloping my little country, like a floating island.
